"Painting the Portrait" with Mary Sauer and Casey Childs

Mary and Casey will demonstrate together their approach to painting the portrait from life each morning of the workshop for 3 hours. In the afternoon, students will paint from the same model and Casey and Mary will alternate each day between walking around giving each person personal critiques and painting along with the class. Students will get to see how both Mary and Casey finish a portrait beyond a 3 hour sketch. Each day will have a different pose to allow students to practice by repetition correct drawing and value relationships while working from a life model. Students will have 4 different angles/poses to painting from during this workshop.
Artists, ranging from beginning to advanced, will have the opportunity to work from a live model, and will receive one-on-one instruction gaining a fuller knowledge of traditional portraiture.
This intensive workshop will be limited to 10 students.

Painting the Portrait in Oils with Casey Childs

This 3-day workshop will be a comprehensive study into painting the portrait in oils. Casey will demonstrate his process each morning discussing key elements that are the building blocks of a successful painted portrait. Casey’s demos will include his approach to an Alla Prima portrait as well as a studio portrait. Casey will cover the fundamentals of painting for all skill levels, from those with a little experience to advanced, to help achieve a solid effect of light and form in paint. He will discuss what makes great portraiture and how he strives to capture the soul of an individual as well as their likeness. Casey will cover all aspects of oil painting from drawing, value, edges and form, as well as a clearer understanding of color. After the morning demo, students will painting from the model and Casey will give individual instruction with each student as they work from the model. He will give advice on an individual level to help each student with their current painting as well as how they can achieve the next desired level in their work. This workshop is open to all artists with some painting experience interested in improving their ability in traditional oil painting.
